Invisalign® aligners are a wonderful modern advancement in dental technology that has made the process of straightening teeth less complicated and less socially awkward. Because aligners are so much easier and self-contained than before, some people forget that there are things that you cannot do with them. Below is a quick To-don’t list:
.) You shouldn’t eat or drink with your aligners in your mouth. Except for drinking water, you need to take your aligners out before eating and drinking anything else. Be sure to rinse them before putting them back in and brush your teeth before that if you are able.
.) Don’t use an abrasive like toothpaste to clean your aligners. Toothpaste contains a microscopic gritty material to clean teeth. These tiny abrasives can gouge small striations into the plastic making a place where bacteria can take hold. This can also dull the look of your aligners, making them more visible on your teeth, defeating the purpose of getting invisible aligners.
.) Don’t use colored soap! You may use an antibacterial soap to clean your aligners but choose the clear kind. The chemicals and coloring in colored soap can stain and discolor your aligners.
.) Do not leave your aligners out on the counter when not in your mouth. Leaving your aligners lying around is a recipe for disaster, breakage, germs, and bacteria. Don’t neglect to clean them and properly put them away where they will not be harmed.
